What Does Microsoft Removal Of OneDrive Unlimited Storage Mean To An Office365 User?

About a week ago Microsoft back tracked on its previously announced and heavily promoted statement that OneDrive users would get unlimited storage for free. As you can imagine that has caused outrage among users of the service especially as the new free tier is just 5GB – yes thats 5GB!!

Here at Purenetworking, we always questions how Microsoft would continue to just give away free storage, especially as no other supplier followed with a offer similar to this. However the way Microsoft has removed this is truly disgraceful. There reason for doing this is that a number of users were abusing the service and using it to backup multiple machines, which isn’t strictly what the service was designed for. This may be true but in our opinion the correct way to remove the unlimited option would have been to give all current OneDrive users 1TB free and then for new user they get say 100Gb or 50Gb. There is currently a campaign to try and get Microsoft to back track on their decision but we don’t expect this to happen.

So many of our customer are coming to us and asking us how this will affect there Office 365 OneDrive for Business allocation. Well at the moment it doesn’t really. Every Office365 gets 1TB of storage and at the moment this hasn’t changed. In fact we don’t expect it to change, because in our opinion Microsoft’s reason for removing the unlimited Onedrive storage option is to drive users to Office365.

The simple fact is that an Office365 subscription is great value, you obviously get the 1Tb of storage but also access to Word/Excel/Outlook etc… just a few pounds a month.

We may not be happy with the removal of the unlimited storage option but Office 365 is still the best storage deal out there.

Office 365 Usage Skyrockets

The press have been reporting over the past few weeks that the use of Microsoft Office 365 is “sky rocking” and that its adoption rate is increasing on that of Google Apps and Box. Its popularity is increasing at such as rate that it is predicted that it will soon surpasses number one enterprise cloud app Salesforce in the very near future.

Is Your Office365 Partner Supporting You? Lawyer Solicitors Experience

We were recently contacted by Lawyer and Solicitors Redman’s, a large law firm based in London regarding there Office365 setup. They had been migrated to Office 365 by one of the so called large Microsoft Partners. However once Redmans email were up and running through Office 365 they were having a lot of difficulty getting any support.

Redmans notice that we provided FREE Office 365 advice and after spending a lot of money with there initial partner didn’t want to waste any more money without understanding what we could do and also how they could use Office365 to help support there business.

After our FREE Assessment we were shocked at the state Office365 was left in. DNS entries were missing, licenses were being used on accounts that should have been setup as “shared mailboxes”. Redmans hadn’t been told what they could use SharePoint for and they didn’t even know they had access to Lync. A old email domain hadn’t even been migrated to Office365 because the partner had told the client that two domains were supported.

The worst thing about the Redmans story is that this isn’t the first time we have discovered such a bad Office365. Many so called Partners are just interested in the initial migration and then either don’t want to provide any additional help or don’t have knowledge or skills to implement the other Office365 services. Our experience shows this is generally because many partners are come from “Email” support backgrounds so while they are comfortable with the initial email migration, they simply don’t understand what SharePoint really does or have any idea how to setup the system for maximum benefit.

Migrate your MS Access Database to Office 365

Hosting your email in the cloud is now the norm, and as people become more and more used to moving there files offsite the only real remaining items that are left sitting on users PCs and servers are old databases.
